First Historic Marker Recalls 1905 Land Auction

Las Vegas is a city better known for its implosions than its restorations. Nevertheless, an important part of any Centennial is taking a reflective look at our beginnings. When the Centennial Commission looked back, it found 21 sites that recall our community's evolution and deserve our admiration. Those 21 sites will receive a historical marker before the end of 2005.

The first historic marker was placed on May 15, 2005 following the re-enactment of the land auction--and right across the street! The marker was placed at Fremont and Main streets at the site of the 1905 land auction, on land where the first train depot was later built, and where the Plaza Hotel stands today.

At the original auction, about 3,000 people gathered in 110-degree heat to bid on prime lots offered by the San Pedro-Los Angeles-Salt Lake RR. A tent city soon sprang to life, and, in time, permanent buildings marked the beginning of Las Vegas.

The San Pedro-Los Angeles-Salt Lake RR built its first train depot in 1905. The depot was demolished in 1970 to make way for the Plaza Hotel, built in 1971.
