LAS VEGAS, May 2, 2005 - Several hundred lucky Las Vegans will get a chance to have their cake and eat it too. The Las Vegas Centennial has thrown down the spatula, challenging local residents to be part of history by volunteering to help assemble the world's largest birthday cake. The whopping 130,000-pound-plus pastry will arrive in more than 30,000 sections from Sara Lee in eight semi-trucks during the wee hours of the morning, and hundreds of volunteers will be needed to unload, unpack and assemble the cake from 12 a.m. until noon on Sunday May 15. Those interested in seeing how things stack up behind the scenes are asked to register by emailing their name and availability to lvbirthdaycake@aol.com. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers will work in teams and compete for prizes in a festive atmosphere that will include music, food and beverages. In addition, all participants will receive a special-edition commemorative t-shirt announcing, "I helped build the World's Largest Birthday Cake."

Non-profit organizations, shelters and other community service organizations are encouraged to bring large containers and help themselves to generous portions from 6 - 8 p.m., so that the Centennial celebration may be shared with as many members of the community as possible. Groups and individuals desiring bulk portions are encouraged to RSVP in advance to lvbirthdaycake@aol.com.

Las Vegas is turning 100 on May 15 and a centerpiece of the year-long Centennial Birthday Celebration is the cutting of the World's Largest Birthday Cake at Cashman Field on Sunday May 15, at 5:15 p.m. The $250,000 cake, provided by Sara Lee, is already registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. It will take 20 days to bake all 30,240 individual sections. The 91,000 pounds of cake and 39,720 pounds of icing will take another 13 hours to unpack and build. The finished cake, measuring 102 feet long, 35 feet wide and 20 inches high and will be on display at Cashman Center - Hall A, beginning at 2 p.m. on May 15.
