Centennial Committee seeks host sites for "City of 100 Murals" public art program

Public and private businesses needed to host murals throughout Las Vegas Valley

Las Vegas, Nev.-March 7, 2005 is the deadline to apply to host a mural as a part of the "City of 100 Murals," program, an art and education project designed to commemorate Las Vegas' 100th birthday by creating an art legacy throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Public and private businesses wishing to host a mural can download an application at www.lasvegas2005.org or contact the Centennial office at 229.2005.

Participating businesses will house murals that will be designed and created by local artists. Murals can be indoor or outdoor, permanent or temporary and can vary in shape, size and texture. The murals will display a wide variety of themes relating to the rich history and culture of Las Vegas. Host sites must pledge to maintain the mural for a minimum of five years.

"This is truly an historic moment for our city," said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, chair of the Centennial Committee. "Housing a mural gives community members the opportunity to take part in what is not only the major art initiative of the Centennial celebration, but one of the largest art initiatives in the city's history."

The "City of 100 Murals" program will create more than 60 community murals at pubic and private sites and nearly 100 murals in public and private schools Valleywide. At the conclusion of the project, a guide and map detailing all the murals will be created as part of the program.

Launched in October, the program is already in full swing, with completed murals in place at the Lied Discovery Children's Museum and UNLV and the Antique Retro Depot building in Boulder City. More than 50 additional murals are actively underway, including sites at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum on Las Vegas Blvd., the Fremont Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas and the TNT Building, the approximate site of Las Vegas' first Ice House, on Main Street.

The Centennial celebration will continue throughout 2005 with hundreds of events and initiatives. The party will kick into high gear during May and June, with an official observance on Las Vegas' birthday, May 15. Joining the Centennial Committee as major partners in the mural project are the Cultural Affairs Division of the City of Las Vegas, the Clark County School District, the Las Vegas Arts Commission, Clark County Cultural Affairs Division, the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, UNLV and The Home Depot, which has already donated more than $23,000 in supplies for the creation of the murals, a contribution of $230 per mural.
