The Las Vegas Centennial Serves as Backdrop for Events Honoring Veterans

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 1, 2005 - During the past 100 years, Las Vegans have been an integral part of the nation's military history. This year several Veterans' Day events will celebrate those who have served our country and the Las Vegas Centennial. Festivities include a Veteran's Day parade through Downtown, a special Viva Vision tribute at Fremont Street Experience, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Aviation Nation Air Show at Nellis Air Force Base.

The following Centennial events are planned for November:

Nov. 1 - Nov. 6 100 YEARS OF INFLUENCE: The Role of Women in Shaping the First Hundred Year of Las Vegas
THE WALL of Women consists of 256 pictures and brief biographies of women who made a difference. Selected components will be will be on display free to the public at the Whitney Library, through Nov. 6, during normal library hours.

Nov. 1 -Nov. 27 LAS VEGAS HISTORY: AN INTERACTIVE ART EXPERIENCE
Location: Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 N. Las Vegas Blvd.

Nov. 1 - Nov. 30 SOLDIERS OF THE OLD FORT
Historical reenactments at the Old Mormon Fort. Free to the public.
Location: Old Mormon Fort State Historic Park

Nov. 1- Dec. 30 100 YEARS OF WATER
This event is aimed at showing the Las Vegas Valley community the history of valley water resources over the past century. Exhibit includes a multimedia station, auto and video device, and written educational material. The exhibit will be on view at various sites.

Nov. 1 - Dec. 31 100 YEARS OF LAS VEGAS IMAGES
An exhibit of historic photo images from the past 100 years on display daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Location: Nevada State Museum and Historical Society

Nov. 1 - Indefinite CENTENNIAL QUILT
This queen-size tribute to the history of Las Vegas will be on display at City Hall from Nov. 1 - 30, and will have a permanent home from Dec. 1, at the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, 702-486-5205.

Nov. 1 - Indefinite 24 HOUR SHOW: MAKING A LIVING IN LAS VEGAS
The 24-Hour Show is a comprehensive exhibit of Las Vegas casino "work culture" based on interviews with a diverse cadre of casino workers who have made Las Vegas home. The grand opening is Oct. 14, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Exhibit open daily from 9 a.m. - 5.pm.

Nov. 4 RAFAEL RIVERA COMMEMORATIVE COLLECTION
A reception will be held from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. with various artists' work that depict Rafael Rivera and Las Vegas history. Thomas Rodriguez will give an educational lecture on Rivera and his significant contribution to Las Vegas history.

Nov. 10 - Nov. 13 OPERATION WELCOME HOME
This very special four-day national kickoff of Operation Welcome Home will be a year-long celebration to publicly honor and thank America's 2.7 million military personnel who served during Vietnam. This initial round of celebrations will be the centerpiece of the annual Aviation Nation festivities sponsored by Las Vegas-headquartered Boyd Gaming during the Veteran's Day weekend. Nov. 10 - Nov. 13 THE MOVING WALL
The Moving Wall is the original half-scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. The wall will be set up in the Main Street Station Hotel/Casino parking lot directly behind the rail cars.

Nov. 11 LAS VEGAS VETERAN'S DAY PARADE
This is one of the largest Veteran's Day parades in the United States. In this Centennial year, the parade will welcome home our Vietnam veterans while it salutes all Americans in uniform. The parade is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 17. 11 a.m. - noon

Nov. 11 - Nov. 13 FREMONT STREET PATRIOT'S PARTY
The Fremont Street Experience, under the fabulous 1,500 foot Viva Vision canopy in historic Downtown Las Vegas, will be alive with light shows that pay tribute to America's military men and women. Sponsored by Boyd Gaming Corp. Shows are hourly from dusk to midnight. Location: 425 Fremont Street

Nov. 12 - Nov. 13 AVIATION NATION AIR SHOW
One of the largest, most diverse and entertaining air shows in America will showcase the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team and the Boyd Gaming-sponsored Las Vegas Air Races that pit historical aircraft in tightly contested and colorful wingtip-to-wingtip competition. Nellis Air Force Base and the Department of Defense host this annual air show in conjunction with the production company, World of Wings. This is a family event celebrating the Las Vegas aviation community.

"Hoopla," an original work by George Walker will have its premiere performance by the Las Vegas Philharmonic at UNLV.

Nov. 24 - Dec. 30 MAGICAL FOREST
The Enchanted Carousel and Forest Express Trains combined with live music, sweet treats, lavishly decorated trees, whimsical displays and visits with Santa Claus make every night in the holiday season a winter wonderland for people of all ages.
