The Las Vegas Centennial Pays Homage to Our Heritage

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 1, 2005 -- From the memories that will be shared at the Old Timers' Reunion, to the honors that will be given to Las Vegas' landmark neon sign designers, Las Vegas Centennial fall festivities offer a multitude of events that pay homage to our colorful history. Downtown hosts a variety of events, including the dedication of five additional Centennial murals on First Friday and the International Hispanic Day Parade, a lively celebration for all ages.

The following are events planned for October:

Oct. 1 - Oct. 7
CAUGHT ON FILM
"Caught on Film" is an exhibit of more than 50 oversized historical photos of events that shaped the face of Las Vegas. You'll see old Vegas nostalgia, glamour and drama in a limited-time exhibit documenting the development our small desert railroad town into Glitter Gulch, and beyond. Admission is free. Hours are Fridays, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, noon - 4 p.m.

CELEBRATING THE POST MODERN
Take a tour of Downtown's most historic building, the former post office, now open to the public every second Saturday of the month through October. Visit the second floor exhibit, "Vegas Viewed in Post Cards" or take a docent tour to learn about the building's past and future.

100 YEARS OF INFLUENCE: The Role of Women in Shaping the First Hundred Year of Las Vegas
THE WALL of Women consists of 256 pictures and brief biographies of women who made a difference and is displayed on the south wall of the Atrium. The Women of Diversity architectural ceramic Triad Tower stands north of THE WALL.

SOLDIERS OF THE OLD FORT
Historical reenactments at the Old Mormon Fort. Free to the public.

100 YEARS OF LAS VEGAS IMAGES
An exhibit of historic photo images from the past 100 years on display daily from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Location: Nevada State Museum and Historical Society

CENTENNIAL QUILT
This queen-size tribute to the history of Las Vegas will be on display at the Grant Sawyer Building from Oct. 1 - 31, at City Hall from November 1 - 30, and will have a permanent home starting Dec. 1, at the Clark County Museum.

FIFTY YEARS OF FABULOUS NEON
Celebration of the landmark signs of Las Vegas and the designers who created them. Co-sponsored by the S2 Art Center and the Neon Museum, this exhibit consists of limited edition photo-lithographs documenting five decades of vintage signs. An invitation only gala reception to honor the designers will open the exhibit Thursday, October 6, 7-9 p.m.

FIRST FRIDAY MURAL DEDICATIONS
Five murals will be unveiled progressively as follows:
3 p.m.-Cirque du Soleil at the S2 Art Center, One East Charleston.
4 p.m.-Gay & Lesbian at Rainbow Plaza, 3rd and Imperial.
5:30 p.m.-The Culinary Union Local 226, 1630 Commerce Street.
7 p.m.-Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, 1205 Las Vegas Blvd S.
9 p.m.-11 p.m.-"Glow Las Vegas," Nevada State Bank, 212 Las Vegas Blvd. S. (in the parking lot across the street from the bank corner of Bridger and Las Vegas Blvd).

LAS VEGAS HISTORY: AN INTERACTIVE ART EXPERIENCE

INTERNATIONAL HISPANIC DAY PARADE
Floats, marching bands, music, equestrian teams, lots of color y sabor! Parade route is on 4th Street from Gass to Fremont Street. Look for the street fiesta on 3rd Street and Stewart after the parade. There will be food, live music and folk dancers. The parade starts at 6 p.m. Free admission.

VEGAS VALLEY BOOK FESTIVAL
Meet your favorite author and discover new ones at the 4th annual Vegas Valley Book Festival. More than 50 novelists, poets, cartoonists and journalists from across the country will participate in readings and panel discussions on poker, prizefighting, Las Vegas history, humor and satire. Keynote presentations include broadcasting legend Stan Freberg, cultural critic Joe Queenan, and celebrated French photohgrapher Francois Paolini. This 10-day festival features writers' workships, children's programs, the Lewis Avenue Poetry Cafe Under the Stars, and a classic boxing film series. Most events are free. Events will be held in downtown Las Vegas' Cultural Corridor, in Henderson, and at locales throughout the valley.

REFLECTIONS PHOTO EXHIBIT
"Reflections" is a photo exhibit that pays tribute to African-Americans who laid the foundation for others to advance in the Las Vegas hospitality and gaming industries. Photos and other personal memorabilia dating back to the 1940s will be on display. Sponored by Nevada Partners, home of the Culinary Training Academy. Private VIP opening of "Reflections" is set for Thursday, October 13 from 3 - 7 p.m.; the exhibit opens to the public on Friday, October 14.

24 HOUR SHOW: MAKING A LIVING IN LAS VEGAS
The 24-Hour Show is a comprehensive exhibit of Las Vegas casino "work culture" based on interviews with a diverse cadre of casino workers who have made Las Vegas home. The grand opening is Oct. 14, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Exhibit open daily from 9 a.m. - 5.pm.

NORTH/SOUTH BALL
The Nevada League of Cities holds its annual conference in Las Vegas. As part of its social events, the League will host a North/South Ball and birthday bash at the Golden Nugget Hotel to celebrate the Centennial of the two Nevada cities: Las Vegas and Sparks.

OLD TIMERS' REUNION
The Old Timers' Reunion celebrates its 10th anniversary with a spectacular line-up of stars who will entertain guests with favorite songs from the '50s to the '70s. This event caters to individuals who have lived in Las Vegas for 30 years or more and are interested in sharing special moments with other pioneers who made Las Vegas what it is today. Reception, 6 p.m., dinner, 7 p.m.

THE CHIP KICKERS BULL BASH

NEON EVOLUTION: LAS VEGAS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Explore the social, cultural, and historical diversity of this 21st Century City, as expressed across a spectrum of dance styles. Distinct influences are drawn from contemporary and classical ballet, as well as American jazz dance, with the third piece choreographed to a Latino-influenced musical score. All three ballets will be integrated into a full evening work featuring the professional dance company of Nevada Ballet Theatre.

NEVADA DAY IN PARADISE
