A Bride Remembers
By Elizabeth Gordan, Alexandria, VA
I want to walk in the Helldorado Parade if that's OK with the planners. My husband and I visit Las Vegas four or five times a year, and we love it.
We were married in Las Vegas on July 26, 1950 at the Wee Kirk O' The Heather wedding chapel. My husband was on his way to Korea as a young soldier, and, after the wedding, I was headed back east to Connecticut to wait for him.
I remember that wedding chapel like it was yesterday. The beautiful spread of green grass, a white picket fence, the New England-style cottage and a beautiful chapel.
Ethel Mae Webb was the chapel's owner back then, and she was certainly before her time. She offered us a 78-rpm recording of our exchange of vows, and photos, too!
I know where Wee Kirk is now, but I don't think it's in the same location. Ethel Mae Webb may have sold the name rights.
Anyway, we have so many good memories of Las Vegas that we would be proud to walk in the Helldorado Parade if you'll let us.
Editor's Note: Although Wee Kirk O' The Heather has had a few change of owners over the years, it's still in the same location at 231 South Las Vegas Blvd. The current owner is seeking to have the chapel listed in the National Historical Register.
