Historical Working Group: Historical Markers, Restorations, Walking Tours

Contacts: Bob Stoldal, Historic Preservation Commission Chair Adrienne Low, Centennial Staff

Historic Markers
The History Working Group (HWG) proposes to expand a Historic Marker Program begun in 1980 by identifying and marking sites that are significant to various cultural and ethnic groups. A potential strategy, which has met success in other historic areas, is to establish a freestanding signage program. By using a cohesive design, the freestanding signs can be positioned so as to create a historical landscape of Las Vegas. The freestanding markers will be designed and fabricated by a local sign company. Installation may be performed by the Department of Public Works. The HWG has had favorable preliminary discussions with Public Works concerning the installation. A dedication ceremony for each marker will take place either throughout the Centennial year or, possibly on a single day geared towards increasing awareness of the history of our city

Watch for special "ribbon cutting" at those sites and learn about special events that shaped our community.

Historic Railroad Cottages
The Las Vegas Railroad Cottages are of historic interest to the Las Vegas community. The cottages are located along 6th Street and Casino Center in the downtown area. Sixty-four of these railroad cottages were built between 1904 and 1910 to house the railroad construction workers. There are only six cottages left. The cottages will be relocated to their permanent home at the new Las Vegas Spring Preserve. The Railroad Cottages will be restored for the enjoyment of Las Vegas community residents who visit the preserve.

24 Hour Radio Show
The 24 Hour Radio Show is a collaborative project between the Western Folk Life Center in Elko and the Nevada State Museum & Historical Society in Las Vegas. The show will highlight the history and work culture of our casino and entertainment workers in Las Vegas. The History Working Group will serve as technical advisors to the project organizers for the documentary radio series. The radio series will consist of 24 seven-minute segments to be aired weekly on Nevada Public Radio during National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" and Nevada Public Radio's "State of Nevada". It is anticipated that the segments will air beginning in April, 2005.
