A Guide to Historic Las Vegas

Historic West Las Vegas

John S. Park Historic District

Las Vegas High School District

Take a walk!

And while you're enjoying our good Nevada weather, learn something about our colorful Las Vegas history.

Everyone knows the famed history of the Las Vegas Strip. But Las Vegas neighborhoods are teeming with interesting stories of their own.

Here are four walking tour brochures to take you back to the early days of our Las Vegas valley. You'll walk through quaint residential neighborhoods, past the Old Mormon Fort, and along Fremont Street to the historic Golden Gate hotel and casino.

A Guide to Historic Las Vegas will give you an overview of Las Vegas history -- from wedding chapels to historic schools. Take this walking tour to gain insight about our town's most historic structures and sites.

Historic West Las Vegas, originally known as McWilliams' Townsite, was named after surveyor J.T. McWilliams who began selling lots in 1904 in the area bounded by Bonanza Road, Washington Avenue, and A and H streets. Many of the early settlers on Las Vegas' "westside" were African-Americans who purchased land, started businesses, and established religious institutions. This brochure covers the area's unique history and includes houses, churches and commercial districts that are significant to the development of West Las Vegas.

The John S. Park Historic District is the first neighborhood listed as an historic district on the City of Las Vegas Historic Register. The area is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout this walking tour, you will view a variety of architectural styles popular during the 1930s to the mid-1950s-the period during which most of the residences were built.

The Las Vegas High School District is unique in Las Vegas as a neighborhood that has retained its architectural and historic integrity. The majority of the houses were constructed between 1928 and the beginning of World War II and have since been converted into professional offices. Begin your tour at the Las Vegas High School (now the Las Vegas Academy), built in 1930 and a significant Art Deco structure.
